Protesting amid the coronavirus pandemic.

A threat.

This morning, the alabama department of public health is warning if protesters aren't careful, we could see a spike in coronavirus cases.

Waay 31's rodneya ross is live at big spring park where another protest is scheduled to happen tonight.

Rodneya -- what are state health officials are recommending?

Officials say protesters should try to stay six feet away from one another and wear masks.

And if you're going to hold hands during a protest, you should make sure to use hand sanitizer as much as possible.

Doctor karen landers with the alabama department of health said we could see an increase in coronavirus cases because of the limited ability to social distance during a protest.

She told us the alabama department of health is disturbed by the death of george floyd -- but it's also important for people to take precautions while protesting.

"it's a very serious virus and it's a very serious illness and it's still in our community."

Again- dr. landers says protesters should try to maintain a six feet distance, wear a mask, and use hand sanitizer.

We reached out to governor kay ivey's office to see if a spike in cases could impact the next phase of the state reopening -- we are still waiting to hear back.
