Lexington police says a couple...now identified as the ritter couple... was in an uber downtown trying to cross at the intersection of east maxwell and south limestone streets but protesters were in the street...blocking the road.

Witnesses say the man... ritter... who is white...threw the first punch at a black protester.

Ritter told the herald-leader he was acting in self- defense and didnt hit first.
