The state of california is racing to speed up testing -- but for now -- when we hear about new cases in our area -- it's actually 2 week old information.

Our vanessa romo explains what this means for our understanding of where new cases come from.

The state testing site in chico called often serve is running at full capacity we are now seeing those testing locations being impacted in addition to in addition to labs receiving those specimens.

Butte county public health officer lisa almaguer says results are taking up to 10 days to get back-- which may increase the spread of covid-19.

The results include people who tested positive three days ago, they may have tested positive 5 days ago... so there is a combination in lab time in those test results.

A delay that is not speeding up due to an increase of people getting tested.

At the end of march and early april, the state was conducting about 2-thousand tests day... in july, we're averaging over 100 thousand.

We all know that testing in california is a vital piece of our response, not only to focus on taking care of patients who present with symptoms in our care delivery system, but also to understand the patterns of transmission across the state.

The state says counties should now abide by a four-tier priority system for testing.

For instance--- hospitalized patients with covid-19 top the list along with close contact of those with infections.

Next in line... those living in high risk facilites... a tier that may possibly speed up covid-19 tests and contain the spread.

As of now butte county public health says there is no information on new testing locations at the moment.
