WAAY 31's Max Cohan talked to parents who want to know why it's too dangerous in the classroom, but safe on the sports field.

The classroom but safe on the sports field?

"for some parents in madison county, playing sports this year is just not worth it for their kids...others feel that it's hypocritical on their district's part and are saying if kids can play sports then schools should be open."

"absolutely not, it's not worth."

Eric broyles doesn't want his 13-year-old daughter playing volleyball at liberty middle school this year.

Friday, no one with huntsville, madison city or madison county schools was available to answer broyles' question.

"and then what's the possibility of this infecting a dad or a mom or a grandma or a sick aunt, a sunday school teacher, a grocery store worker?

Whatever - and is it really worth that risk?"

The state board of education left the decision to the alabama high school athletic association.

It passed the buck to local school districts to make final calls.

Friday morning, on a facebook live with state superintendent eric mackey and senator doug jones, we asked mackey about sports.

53:10 i'm having conversations with the ahsaa and multiple conversations with health and we've had some discussions about football and volleyball and we do have a lot of concerns.

But those concerns are not enough for any state mandate.

The schutz family is trying to make sense of it.

"i mean if we're leaving it up to state, it seems like the state is saying 'ok open up,' if were leaving it to local, local is trying to shut us down.

Their children run cross country in huntsville city schools and just want consistency from the people who are paid to make decisions.

"it's contradictory from the decisions that the school board is making, it's contradictory from what a lot of parents' decision making is."

"campuses are currently open for extra curricular activities like sports in the reopening plans of both huntsville and madison city schools.

Huntsville schools plan cited gov ivey's may 21st order in their decision to participate in extra curriculars.

Reporting in huntsville, max cohan, waay 31 news."
