Good Samaritans drop off supplies for wildfire evacuees

Good Samaritans across Lane County have been dropping off supplies at Thurston High School for evacuees of the Holiday Farm Fire.

Through challenging times the western oregon community has had to come together time and time again... and these wildfires are no exception... kezi 9 news reporter chris lueneburg shows us how good samaritans in lane county is supporting evacuees... and how you can help too.

Waking up to smoke in the air-- mark moleina read the news and rushed to thurston high school... "this parking lot was packed with families with children and pets and animals, and i started making live video feeds on my facebook page asking people to please come down, bring food, bring water."

Inside the school-- evacuees are getting connected to resources... outside... good samaritans were dropping off unsolicited supplies... water, food, clothes and toys.

"it's really beautiful.

People are canning foods and bringing it here, there's tons of water.

I had a big thing of clothes, a big box of clothes."

But the red cross says right now... they can't accept material donations.

"though the countless cases of water bottles and food supplies won't go to waste... the red cross says right now monetary donations are the best way to support the volunteer effort."

The cascades region red cross says when evacuees arrive, their needs are being met on a case by case basis-- be it the bare nessecities, prescriptions left behind or more unique needs... which means monetary donations keep them flexible.

"what that allows us to do is immediately put that generous gift into action and funnel it exactly where those needs are greatest at the time."

Through good times and bad-- the community showing spirit in the face of adversity.
