1,700 BOXES OF PRODUCE GIVEN AWAY IN PROVIDENCE

Tonight at 5 -- food is still hard to come by for many families -- produce especially today -- one local kentucky community --- is getting the gift of fresh fruits and vegetables -- to help fill the gap left by the pandemic.

44news reporter marisa patwa is in providence -- with a look at efforts to feed the community.

Streets blocked off cars piled up waiting it was a busy morning monday at the providence community food bank as 1700 boxes of fruits and vegetables were given away and it was all thanks to a donation from the audubon area community services "this food bank- it s been very successful because of community support.

But the reason it is so successful and needed it is because our community needs it and with the unemployment surge we had this year because of the virus and just the general effect of being a lower- income community we've always had a great demand for this food bank."

The produce donation was much needed especially with the inventory they normally get from the tri- state food bank down by 50 percent at one point this summer?

"it startled back in march and april this year, the supply of food available to us at dwindled.

It has picked up some now but our local sherway has helped supplement the amount of food we get.

And we get a lot of donations from people throughout the community that really make a big difference and help us out."

And it was truly a community effort with even the chief of police and mayor helping to unload boxes "this is very important, especially in these times, to get food to our population and and it s dear to my heart that we get these boxes out there and get these to the people.
