Absentee voting deadline drawing near

Time is running out if you plan to vote absentee for November.

More people are turning to absentee voting because of the coronavirus this year.

Voting is still underway but the deadline to do it in person is quickly drawing near.

W-t-v-a's bronson woodruff joins us now live with what people can expect if they vote absentee.

Here at the tishomingo court house in iuka, the circuit clerk explained there are two ways to vote absentee.

The first is to simply come by and do it in person before election day, and the second it to call and ask it to be mailed to you.

One option is to call in and request a ballot by mail.

Option two is to come to the office in person and spend about ten mintes filling a ballot out early for election day.

Circuit clerk josh mcnatt said for the call-in option, the whole process takes about two weeks.

"it's important that voters don't wait until the last minute before they start that mail-in absentee process."

Mcnatt explained there has been an increase in absentee voting this year.

He believes that's partly because of the coronavirus, and partly because of today's political climate, he said.

" i think in 2016 we had about 750, so we're about halfway through absentee voting, so i would expect about a thousand absentee votes this year."

Standup: "mcnatt said that if a person receives an absentee ballot by mail, at that point, it has to be mailed back.

It can't be dropped off here in person at the circuit clerk's office here inside the courthouse."

"combination of the virus, and i think we're also going to see an increase in voter turnout, and we expect an increase in absentee ballots."

Mcnatt added there's also been an increase in voter registration this year.

The last day to vote absentee in person is october 31st.
