That's because the only heat was provided by a wood burning stove in the back of the church, and the only light with the exception of a few christmas decorations came through the windows courtesy of mother nature.

The churchwass the oldest building in herkimer county, it's also one of the oldest churches in new york.

"this is a wonderful old church and we've been working on it to keep it up to date, we just want the people to come enjoy the atmosphere, and have a sense of historic times when they came here and it was cold, and there was little light, and they could still worship and celebrate christmas."

Organizers say their goal is to continue the holiday tradition and hold services every yr on thsunday b.
