Monica harkins has more in our top story this morning... a not-so clear name...for a not-so clear illness.

"pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome" "dr. stack: an inflammatory process that can involve multiple organs."

Public health commissioner dr. steven stack says cases have been reported in europe and across the u-s.

Now, two cases in two days in kentucky kids.

"for these individuals who have this this is very dangerous and life threatening," monday, the governor asked for a moment of silence for a 10-year-old on a ventilator fighting the syndrome.

Tuesday, we learned a 16-year-old is in the hospital with the same illness..but dr. stack says thankfully, the second case isn't as severe.

"stack:the children who get sick with this can have cardiovascular collapse and require supportive measures to maintain their blood pressure, respiratory collapse requiring breathing support with a mechanical ventilator."

Doctors say kids can't pass it to other kids...they get it based on how their immune systems respond...likely to coronavirus.

Dr. stack says some of the patients nationwide are testing negative for coronavirus, but positive for the antibodies associated with it.

The governor says of the two kentucky cases both tested positive for coronavirus and antibodies.

"stack: that's one of the oddities of this syndrome.

It appears to cause an inflamation process after you've recovered from the initial infection, but where the body continues to struggle with it."

Dr. stack says symptoms include, rash, fever, fatigue and watery eyes... symptoms similar to kawasaki syndrome.

Doesn't sound familiar?

Lexington family care doctor john richard says it's rare.

"richard: the risk of kawasaki is in the population are such as this is probably about 50 or 100,000, so it's not very frequently seen illness, but one nonetheless it's again difficult to treat because there is no real type of cure."

But dr. richard says the symptoms are treatable which is a good sign for this new syndrome..so, parents should not panic..but stay vigilant.

"richard: it has been rare so far, but we also can't turn a blind eye to it."

You're likely already doing what doctors recommend to protect your kids...washing your hands...wearing a mask... and staying home if you can.
