New Hartford graduation postponed

The school community is having a parade for New Hartford seniors after they were forced to stop the non-traditional ceremonies they planned at the Stanley Theatre.

A chaotic and unsteady day, for new hartford school's graduating seniors and their parents.

A turbulent week, actually.

They tried to hold graduation at the stanley theater, but then had to stop, due to covid-19 restrictions.

Then, a quiet attempt to do it at the school today was shut down by albany.

Newschannel 2's joleen ferris is live at the new hartford shopping center, where they're having a parade for those graduating seniors.

Joleen?

Thanks, kristen.

We heard stories of these seniors literally sprinting into the building, trying to get their walk in, before the school was forced to shut down the ceremony.....a milestone they likely won't get back.

The morning began with pares onew hl seniors, on facebook, urging other parents to call the oneida county executive's office and tell them they want their kids to be able to walk the stage, after their attempt to hold a staggered graduation over three days at utica's stanley theater was forced to end after day two.

When asked about it, county executive anthony picente, issued a statement that got right to the point.

Quote: under the governor's executive order, schools are closed and venues such as the stanley are not to be open under any circumstance.

There are also currently no guidelines from the state on how school districts should conduct their graduations.'

Picente went on to say that the new hartford school district would have known this, had they taken part in his recent discussions with local school districts.

Late morning, it appeared as though the problem was solved, as parents posted on facebook that the ceremony would continue today, at the high school.

Then, they deleted those posts.

The school principal and district superintendent had not yet returned our calls and messages.

Between noon and 1:00, students could be seen entering the high school in caps and gowns.
