Chennai runs out of space for garbage

The Greater Chennai Corporation has seen a 50% increase in garbage collection post cyclone Michaung, collecting 9,000 tonnes of waste a day now. There is no space at transfer stations and delays in door-to-door collection have led to waste piling up on the roads. The corporation is struggling to handle newer waste like sofas and bed mattresses as material recovery centres are not working. Hiring ragpickers could help unclog transfer stations and the dumpyard.
